My friend Tara is the quintessential ‘Girl with the sun in her hair’ from a John Barry soundtrack, and in her middle years still a Goddess. She once texted me to say, ‘I’m going off in a speed boat’ when I was due to meet her at her beach hut. She knows absolutely everyone. Last night she and I walked along the promenade to the pier. The sky was pink and blue. At the end of the pier there was dancing. Friends were enjoying the balmy night and drinking cold beer. The warm sea air caressed our skin. The orange moon rose over the open sea, and there was a feeling of almost ecstatic relief just to be together dancing in community again. The DJ was playing high on a platform above us and people were seated along the vast platform of the pier. We danced to Frank Sinatra. I had my long silk pink scarf and waved it around. So many people had been bruised and broken from social deprivation during the lockdown. I could see it in their eyes. I could see the love too, from being together again. Hastings Borough Council is to be thanked for allowing us this space on the pier. The best social distancing club in the world.
