I have lived with it all my life

Although as a child I didn’t know its name

But I was able to conjure up ideas and games

And hours of solitude

Exploring bush land and creeks

Creating reams of dreams

On paper

Longing took me far and wide

Pursuing its elusive exotic ways

It taught me to sing

And to speak French

To hitch-hike alone

And to jump out of moving cars

It took me to mountains and Greek islands

To deserts and strangers’ beds

It taught me its foolish ways

And its wisdom

Longing is my constant companion

In my waking hours and my dreams at night

It accompanies me on journeys

Driving through tree tunnels

Imagining lives contained up the tiny lanes

And what lies around the next corner

It allows me to meet others

Similarly afflicted

Or Blessed

Longing made me a mother

It taught me to paint

It taught me to love

It has taught me I have never yet

Met anyone

Like me
