Hymn to Night

Hymn to Night.

Painting considered as a theatre of the soul, in which the mystery of the life of the soul is reenacted. I have always been concerned with Art as poetic consciousness, as metaphysical experience, and in my painting I have sought to explore the mystery of consciousness. A picture lives on many different levels at once, it is an interpenetration of planes of reality, it cannot be analysed or anatomised into single levels because one level can only be understood in the light of others. The reality or interior life of the picture can only be realised as a total experience. Partial experience, aestheticism for example, seems superficial.
It is my strong conviction that one of the functions of Art is to help free man from the bondage of transient emotions and from the slavery and prison of the world of small desires, the hypnosis of time.

Love the Collins quote – art is indeed an esoteric process.
